The Ferriday women, Americans drawn from real life, remain relatively untouched but contribute mightily from afar. How do women, especially well-to-do women, cope when war utterly transforms their families and their fortunes? Kelly chooses three particular women as central to her thematic constant. Thematically, both of Kelly’s novels center on a difficult subject. Eliza Ferriday set the standard for her daughter, working nonstop to help White Russian women marooned after World War I, setting up committees and organizations to find places for the women to live and situations where they might earn their livelihoods. Just as Kelly fictionalized Caroline’s not-insignificant accomplishments, now she has re-imagined the equally impressive achievements of Caroline’s mother. Lost Roses is Martha Hall Kelly’s prequel to Lilac Girls, a novel I previously (and enthusiastically) reviewed for “Bookin’ with Sunny.” Caroline Ferriday, featured prominently in Lilac Girls, was a real-life debutante and socialite who worked tirelessly to help European children orphaned during World War II and who advocated for the punishment of Nazi war criminals following the war. Lost Roses – The American Ferriday women (of the Lilac Girls) are again involved in helping women and families displaced by the devastation of war. ![]() ![]() ![]() Overall I enjoyed this book more so than some of Sarah Jio’s previous books. I’m not sure that there is any deeper meaning in that other than almost all of her stories are set in Seattle which contains lots of large bodies of water. I couldn’t help but notice it was also the second story of hers that involved the attempted-drowning of a woman. This book has all the elements that we have come to know Sarah Jio for: the dueling narrative, the missing women, and the lost artifacts/papers that are discovered years later and offer clues to the mystery. ![]() They are from two completely different worlds and she believes that things would never work out between them. She catches the attention of one of the wealthiest men in the city, but worries that love is not enough to keep them together. Vera is a poor woman living on poverty and struggling to survive. Meanwhile in 1933, Daniel Ray’s story unfolds, along with his mother’s, Vera Ray. When Claire learns more about the disappearance of Daniel Ray, she can’t help but feel obligated to follow up on what happened to him and where he ended up. Blackberry Winter: A Novel by Sarah Jio is a duel narrative story about Claire Aldridge, a reporter who is researching a late-season snowstorm that occurs in Seattle, and the similar occurrence that happened eighty years ago in 1922, when a little boy went missing. ![]() ![]() ![]() So even many Texans might be unaware that there was a short period when the Rangers were disbanded before being reconstituted by the Reconstruction legislature of Texas. The Rangers have grown into legends far afield of Texas, their bravery and fortitude exemplary, their mythical prowess with a gun recounted in popular books and songs. Traditionally, the first responders to these attacks were the Texas Rangers. Continuing raids by the Comanche and Apache, border skirmishes with Mexico over land, cattle and horses, and homegrown villains kept the early settlers of the Republic on constant alert. ![]() Certainly Texas in the “good ole days” experienced its share of bloody conflicts. ![]() Richardson, that if a person wanted to obtain distinction in Texas, all he had to do was kill someone. Jem must be one of the most pessimistic protagonists. As she explores this new friendship and the trouble it brings, she must carry the burden of knowing when he will die, and sadly, that date is depressingly soon. Since the day her mother died, Jem has been in the foster system, constantly changing homes until, one day, she makes a friend. Jem discovered that the numbers she saw on her mother matched the date of her mother’s death. When Jem was six, her mother died from a drug overdose. The numbers were an 8 digit combination only she could see and she only later discovered what they meant. For as long as she has known, Jem has seen people’s numbers. This book takes place in London during the Year 2010. Rachel Ward’s Num8ers is the first book in the Numbers trilogy. ![]() ![]()
